Adoption Made Simple

Here at the HSHC, we are dedicated to making the adoption process simple and rewarding. Our goal is to match adopters to animals that fit their personality and lifestyle, making both animal and adopter exceedingly happy.

Step 1: Application

The application process allows us to get to know you, and to therefore help you find the perfect pet. First, we ask that you fill out our Pre-Adoption Questionnaire Adobe PDF icon so that we can validate your readiness to make a forever commitment to the pet that you are adopting.

Next, if you are considering adopting a dog, we ask you to participate in our Meet Your Match Program. When dogs arrive at our facility, we administer five simple tests to create a personality profile of the animal. We then ask that potential adopters complete our Dog Adopter Survey Adobe PDF icon so that our staff can match you to a dog that compliments your personality and lifestyle. We even give you color-coded passes based on your survey results, which match the dogs' bandannas and kennel cards so you can easily focus on selecting your potential pet!

Please note that:

  • We do not adopt to those with the intent of keeping the pet outside.
  • If you are renting, we will require verbal permission from your landlord to have a pet.
  • We do not hold pets for adoption. We strive to rescue as many pets as possible from the Harrison County Animal Control Center before their scheduled date of euthanasia. With each adoption we gain space to rescue another pet, and therefore cannot hold pets after the application contract is approved and the adoption is completed.

Step 2: Adoption Contract

After your Pre-Adoption Questionnaire is approved, you have completed the Meet Your Match Program (if adopting a dog), and have selected your pet, you will be asked to complete the Adoption Contract Adobe PDF icon and pay the adoption fee.

Adoption fees are as follows:

  • Dogs: $95.00
  • Cats: $85.00
  • Puppies and Pure Breeds: $150.00

The fee includes: Spay/Neuter, a minimum of the first round of shots, flea treatment, worming, intra nasal bordetella vaccine, ear mite treatment, and a complimentary leash.

Note: All pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on shots before departure.

Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the contract.

Step 3: Finalizing the Adoption

If everything seems to be a great fit, then by this point the adoption process is almost complete!

The majority of pets in our shelter are already spayed/neutered. If, however, you have selected an unaltered pet then an appointment will be made with either our shelter vet or with a vet of your choice to have the necessary surgery completed.

Afterwards, you are free to take your new family member home! You will be given a goody pack with samples and tips on how to help your new addition adjust to its new family and surroundings.
