Friends of the HSHC Drive (2012)
Dear Friend of the Humane Society of Harrison County,
Once again, we need your help. Many of you may not realize that as the economy continues to lag, it has a devastating impact on the pets in our community. Our shelter continues to see a significant increase in animal surrenders. And our operating costs to care for and place these pets have gone up considerably. As an example, I would like to share with you a recent animal rescue story.
For many years the HSHC and the Harrison County Animal Control have been trying to shut down a local puppy mill. Finally, with the assistance of local law enforcement and the National Humane Society of the US, twenty seven dogs were confiscated from the puppy mill. Most were in poor health and all were terrified. They had lived their entire lives in a cage with little human interaction. But they were welcomed into our shelter and were all treated by a vet and then spayed or neutered. All but three of the rescued pets have been placed into loving homes. While this was a happy ending for these animals, our staff and volunteers, it came as a great expense to our shelter. Thousands of dollars that we had not anticipated were spent in medical care, emergency surgery and spay/neuter surgery. The expense for required medications amounted to a small fortune. This year, we are counting on you to help us with the pets rescued from the puppy mill and all those to come.
Your contribution to our 2012 Friends of the HSHC Drive helps the homeless animals find a home and entitles you to a tax free contribution. In return, we will keep you up to date with our rescue efforts and shelter achievements through our quarterly newsletter.
