Post-Adoption Tips
So you have gone through the process of selecting the perfect pet and are finally bringing him home! Adding a new family member is always exciting, but don't forget how your new pet feels. Suddenly he is in a new home with new people, and he needs some time to adjust.
Here are some tips to help both you and your pet make a smooth transition:
- Before bringing your pet home, determine the rules. For example, will he will allowed on the couch? Where will he sleep? By determining these things in advance, you will be able to act consistently and thus provide a predictable structure for your new pet. This will help ease his adjustment.
- Purchase all the items you'll need (i.e. food and water bowls, leashes, toys, etc.) in advance and have everything placed where you want it to go. In essence, have your pet's environment prepared before he steps through the door.
- Let your pet explore his new home at his own pace. Let him approach you, and make your response a rewarding and reassuring one. Talk to him in calm, soft tones.
- The enthusiasm of young children can sometimes overwhelm a new pet. Help children to recognize when you pet is uncomfortable and to understand that he needs some alone time.
- Have patience, as it will take a few days for your pet to become comfortable in his new environment. It may be a few weeks before he starts to bond with the family.
- Wait until your pet is comfortable in his new surroundings before inviting friends and family over to meet him. Also, do not take him on any car excursions (other than a trip to the vet's). In addition, you may want to refrain from taking him for a walk unless the route is free of other dogs, noise, etc. Your pet is overwhelmed enough as it is!
