Who we are
We are strictly a "no kill" facility. In other words, we keep our animals at our shelter until a good home is found.
For every animal that we place into a home, we rescue another from Animal Control. We make every effort to select the healthiest and most compatible friends for our clients. It is a difficult choice, but one that is necessary. It is our dream to be able to save and house all the animals before they are euthanized at the Animal Control Center. It may seem like an impossible mission, but it is our goal.

Meet our HSHCWV House Pets
RIP Our Dearest Hobgoblin July 15, 2021
https://www.facebook.com/hobbswv/photos/a.736575226403866/4239435469451140/ Hobs has always brought joy and laughter to all who come to visit the Humane Society of Harrison County. She is a 10 year old cat that loves to "help out" employees and volunteers. You often see her lounging about the place. Over the years, we've collected too many funny stories and pictures to keep to ourselves so this page is dedicated to chronicle her life and share it with all of our loving fans. Visit Hobs Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/hobbswv/ RIP Louis July 18, 2024
He was abandoned in a house after his person got into drugs. Our director has known him since he was a kitten so we took him in. He has been adopted twice - but never seemed to happy where he was . So now he roams our hall ways in cat room looking for his next snack. And we adore our 17 lb soft meower. Our sweet boy had an aggressive growing mouth tumor. Louie had a large body and even larger heart. He loved to give hugs. He would make sure to push his way in for loving, especially when your trying to type. He loved to eat until his last moments. Never had a cross moment, even though he could get huffy over nail trims and such. He loved all he met, dogs/cats/humans. He was a wonderful cat who had a great start to life, a somewhat shi**y middle, but then smothered in love these past few years. He will be greatly missed. 2013-2024 |
Chanel - aka Nay or NayNay came to us Nov 17th, 2020 after being adopted, and then returned. She is timid, and has stressed induced alopecia. But she loves us here, and makes a sweet addition to our pack.
Spike came to us July 20, 2022 after his owners home burned down. He is an 8 year old Mexican Hairless. We thought they may come back for him, but they never did. He is an ornery boy that complements our sweet Nay. They both love to spend lunch time with us, take walks and runs out on the property, and curl up to nap together. RIP Our Dearest Werthers 4/27/2020
Those of you that have been to the shelter in the past 4-1/2 years have met our house dog, the little tan dachshund. He was literally tossed out like garbage out of the owner's car window into Animal Control's parking lot, where he was caught by one of the AC staff. Once 'surrendered', HSHC staff Frankie & Joe met him, we knew he had to be our dog mascot (at the time we had only a cat mascot Hobs). We decided to change his name to help him forget his past (he didn't seem to care for the old one anyway), and with his beautiful creamy caramel colored coat decided on Werthers (like the candy). He definitely fit the original part in his personality! Werty was one of our pack, loved by everyone who met him, and most dogs & cats too. He had a loud indoor voice, he adored food, he enjoyed scouring the fence line for locusts to crunch on, he enjoyed his trips to Home Depot and Lowes looking for flowers, and he especially loved his home with staff Joe over the past five years. He has been to schools, in parades, and has represented the HSHC well. He had been recently diagnosed with Spleen and Liver cancer, so we knew his time was short. But as anyone who knows Werty - he was small in stature but mighty in strength. He has been smothered with love, treats, and rest this past weeks, but dad Joe knew it was his time. We will miss him. As the Werthers Original commercial song goes: "When one who loves you says to you: You're someone very special too." Werthers the Original (aka Wert, Werty, Werty Squirty, and so many more) HSHC Gotcha Day 11/13/2015 to Rainbow Bridge 4/27/2020.
